I am a 100% proponent of ADUs and reside in Washoe where they have been legal for years with minimal impact or ill effects. I was on the Techical Advisory Committee for the last failed ADU ordinance,

ADUs are a side show with extremely limited impact on housing creation. Reno might see 20 a year even with the most liberal ordinance.

So why am I opposing consideration of the ADU ordinance at the this time? Because STRs (Short Term Rentals) is the issue that needs to be addressed first by Council. There are currently 2000+ STRs available in Reno (1400 on VERBO and Airbnb alone). Those are 2000+++ unit not being rented to residents in our core neighborhoods. STRs should be banned in Reno if any of the aAster Plan goals are to be achieved.

Can ADUs be STRs? Dunno, since COR has not established STR regulations.. So let's sit back and get the priorities straight, and postpone ADUs until there is an STR policy in place,

This is a great point, Mike, thanks. I was surprised to see no reference to short-term rentals in the recent email about the staff recommendations to be presented to Council on July 31--even though half of the City's recent public survey was about STRs. Hopefully STRs will at least be included in the agenda item about ADUs so Council can talk about them, too.
