Alicia, I realize it's a lot of effort on your part to continue your unique contribution to local journalism. I wonder if there is a way to consolidate the few local efforts we have into a nonprofit umbrella. Each media outlet would be independent, especially editorially, yet there could be a coordinated campaign to obtain funding. Thanks for all you do.
Thanks so much, Gordon. It's an intriguing thought. Like you, I've been wondering how to help residents better follow all the great but disparate media outlets and news sources covering local affairs these days. I fear it's just too many for most people to regularly follow. Let's keep up that discussion.
One option would be sort of a donor-advised/assisted fund (DAF) administered through the Community Foundation by a panel of journalist experts, including national and academic members.
I don’t favor an individual rich tech guy buying the RGJ and spending 20x!!!
I’m uncomfortable sending money to Gannett to fund Mark Robison, while I’ll probably pay whatever Jon Ralston asks for a year….
Then I feel bad not sending money to you for your Substack.
My decisions are completely irrational!!!
I rather pay $X per month and have people whose judgment I trust (better than mine!!!) make the allocation.
Sort of like Buffett “delegating” his philanthropy decisions to Bill and Melinda…sort of…
Like your work on the Historical commission, I urge you to have the conversation with Eaton. I will be happy to attend.
However, it will only be effective if web journalists like you and Conor (Renoites podcast) are included in the first meeting with Mainstream Media in TV, radio, and print… Brian Duggan now at KUNR.
Another process of discernment would be funding a researcher/second journalist to work for Jason Hidalgo.
Or providing funds to Pro Publica to pay for an highly skilled, national quality, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist devoted to 8-County Western Nevada. I think Anjanette would help but not 100%. She’s now doing other stuff!!!
I’ll let others make the (obvious, IMO) Operation Sunlight decision….
Despite my different approach, I wish Steve Wolgast would return to his previous contribution.
Having me make these decisions is like me replacing Oliver X at Artown!!!
