Wards 1 & 3 Reno City Councilmember Community Forums on June 30 & July 1
It's a slow holiday week for the City of Reno.
As you might expect, we’re looking at an especially slow week at the City of Reno. There are no scheduled meetings of City public bodies, just “Community Forums” with two City Councilmembers, as listed below. The forced pause in meetings of most citizen Boards and Commissions also means there’s little City news to update you on, so this may indeed be the briefest Brief ever briefed.
But first, a brief appeal for you to become a paid subscriber, if you’re so inclined.
Monday, June 30, 5:30pm: COMMUNITY FORUM with Ward 1 City Councilmember Kathleen Taylor
One of the city’s “Community Forums” will be held with Ward 1 Reno City Councilmember Kathleen Taylor at Reno City Hall on Monday, June 30 at 5:30pm. Although there is no agenda and the meeting will not be livestreamed or recorded, the City calendar entry indicates that those who attend will receive an update from RTC, learn about the Reno Revival Tentative Map, and participate in a Q&A session.
Tuesday, July 1, 5:30pm: VIRTUAL COMMUNITY FORUM with Ward 3 City Councilmember Miguel Martinez
For his part, Ward 3 Reno City Councilmember Miguel Martinez will be holding a virtual-only Community Forum on Tuesday, July 1 at 5:30pm. This one promises to provide information about Development Projects in Ward 3, along with an opportunity to participate in Q&A. You can register here to watch and participate.
ONLINE SURVEY: Public Safety Center Sculptures
As I mentioned last week, there was a community meeting on June 25th with the artists selected to create the sculptures for the new Public Safety Center (headquarters for the Reno Police). You can read about the meeting here:
As Noah Bond reports, “The artists say community involvement is essential as they begin shaping concepts. Organizers hope the final pieces will reflect key themes tied to Reno’s identity — including the Truckee River, the city’s mining heritage, and its cultural evolution.”
I hope the artists understand that Reno has more of a railroad heritage than a mining heritage. If it helps, several years ago, I wrote a chapter about the mythic local mining heritage concocted by the Silver Legacy Resort, for a book called Imagining the Big Open: Nature, Identity, and Play in the New West. You’re welcome to read it here.
Residents are being asked to take this ONLINE SURVEY to help refine the ideas for the sculptures. I only see one question there, so I wonder if we’ll be seeing any more.
THROUGH JULY 7: My book, Reno’s Big Gamble, is 50% off
As I mentioned last week, my book, Reno’s Big Gamble, Image and Reputation in the Biggest Little City, is 50% off through July 7. Order $75 worth of books from the University Press of Kansas (there are a lot of great ones!) during the sale, and shipping is free. Just enter the promo code 24SUMMER25 at checkout after selecting my book on its webpage here. If you’re reading it for a book club and would like me to join you, just let me know.
BY JULY 20: VOTING for the Reno News & Review 2025 Best of Northern Nevada
As I mentioned last time, you can now vote in the annual Best of Northern Nevada contest from the Reno News & Review. I’d especially appreciate your vote for Best Local Author, which you can find in the Personalities category. You can access the online ballot at https://vote.renonr.com/ and keep in mind that you have to vote in at least ten categories for your vote to count. So hop on and support all your favorites!
That’s it for today. Until next time, stay cool, always carry water for yourself & others, and please look out for each other. Have a safe and meaningful Independence Day.
